BL Wick and Real Estate

WHEN LAND WAS DIRT CHEAP IN CEDAR RAPIDS

Real estate investments have always been successful and profitable in Cedar Rapids, and probably will always continue to be so. As shown in other articles, the land upon which Cedar Rapids is built was originally owned by five men, Judge Greene, Nicholas Brown, Addison Daniels, Wm. Sanford, and Alexander Ely. The division of the property was made in 1849 as is shown elsewhere, and it is from that time that most of the real estate transfers were made. All the gentlemen made fortunes from their speculations.

History of Linn County, Iowa...by Luther A. Brewer and B. L. Wick. 2 vols. Cedar Rapids: Torch Pr., 1911. https://www.gutenberg.org/files/42220/42220-h/42220-h.htm on page 382.

BL Wick has played an important part in my life. I really like the local history that he documented at the time that he wrote this book Marion was the county seat not Cedar Rapids it was around 1919 that CR would take over as county seat.

Why I thought this was a fitting topic to talk about was because BL Wick represented the family of the guy who 1st got me interested in duplexes and real estate. their family's dad died on the job and BL wick won compensated for the loss which helped the family survive the great depression.

BL Wick owned large amounts of land in the county himself as I looked at maps of land ownership from the history center. I couldn't really find a lot of info about BL Wick so I thought I would compile this list of information and resources about him. He is the Wick of  Meth-Wick.
